The earliest forms of Tamil literature were oral, with works passed down through generations before being written down. The earliest inscriptions in Tamil were found on stone, and they date back to around 500 BCE. These inscriptions mainly consisted of religious messages, administrative records, and royal proclamations. new forms of Tamil literature emerged, mainly in the form of devotional poetry and songs. The works of Tamil saints like Alvars (devotees of Vishnu) and Nayanmars (devotees of Shiva) played a crucial role in shaping Tamil religious literature. The most significant early Tamil literary tradition is known as Sangam literature. This was a collection of poems composed by Tamil poets, compiled in the Sangam academies, which were established in ancient Tamil kingdoms. Tamil literature has a rich and ancient history, spanning over two millennia. The development of Tamil books and written works can be broadly categorized into various periods, each contributing to the cultural and intellectual heritage of the Tamil-speaking world. Tamil literature, from its ancient origins to the modern-day digital era, has evolved into a vibrant, multi-genre tradition. Its history reflects the culture, philosophy, and social changes of Tamil-speaking communities, while continuing to play a significant role in global literature. The development of Tamil books, especially through the influence of both traditional oral and written forms, showcases the ongoing dynamism of Tamil cultural expression.
